What to expect
Vintage tram cars climb Snaefell's 621-metre summit through open moorland carpeted with heather, the Irish Sea expanding in every direction as you ascend. At the summit café you take in the legendary six-kingdoms view before descending to Laxey village. The Great Laxey Wheel — Lady Isabella, built in 1854 — towers 22 metres above the valley floor; you can climb inside the structure and walk the breast of the wheel itself. The Victorian mining village around it is a remarkably intact industrial landscape.

Laxey is accessible by Manx Electric Railway from Douglas (approx. 30 min). The Snaefell Railway departs Laxey station. Allow 4–5 hours for both attractions. Pre-purchase Manx Electric Railway tickets at Douglas terminus. Confirm all-aboard in Douglas and factor tram frequency into your return timing.
