Explore the lesser-known coastal Mayan salt-trading city of Xcambó, then witness the surreal bubblegum-pink waters of Las Coloradas lake — two otherworldly sights almost no cruise visitor finds, all within an hour of the pier.
What to expect
Your guide collects you dockside and drives east along the Yucatán coast to Xcambó, a compact but impressive coastal ceremonial centre where Maya merchants once traded salt with the entire peninsula. Climb the main pyramid for sweeping lagoon views. Continue to the vivid pink lake — its colour caused by halophilic algae and salt crystallisation — for photographs that defy belief. Return at a relaxed pace with time for a cold michelada at a beachside palapa on the way back.
Good to know
Both sites are within 60–90 minutes of Progreso pier, making timing stress-free. Wear light clothing and hat; the ruins have minimal shade. The pink lake is most vivid in dry season (Nov–May) and at midday light. Book in advance as small-group spots fill quickly on busy ship days.
