Fuerte Amador is a tender port for most ships. You board tenders at the gangway shortly after the ship anchors in Panama Bay, with the ride to the pier on Isla Flamenco taking 10–20 minutes. The pier sits at the end of the Amador Causeway, roughly 20–35 minutes by taxi from Casco Viejo or the Miraflores Locks area, depending on traffic.
No ship shuttle runs into town; you take a port-approved taxi from inside the terminal or walk to the causeway gate to negotiate with waiting drivers. On days with multiple vessels—Princess has eight sailings here in the next four months, Cunard three, Holland America two—tender queues and causeway traffic thicken noticeably.
The classic first-timer trap is treating the published all-aboard time as your personal deadline. The last tender leaves 45–90 minutes earlier. Build your return from the last tender time, not all-aboard, and add a generous buffer for traffic and security lines. Many independent travellers learn this the hard way on busy days.

The ship’s version of the full-day canal experience often costs double or more. For a couple that’s an extra USD 300–400 easily. The ship wins only when guaranteed return matters most: the 6-Hour Panama Canal Southbound Cruise & Lunch at USD 165 per person includes a long transfer and a hard promise the ship will wait. On a tight schedule with Princess, Cunard or Holland America, that peace of mind can justify the markup.
Shorter options like the Casco Viejo tour or the Emberá experience are straightforward wins direct. The Aerial Tram and Sloth Sanctuary at USD 143 each is closer but still cheaper independently unless the ship bundles transport in a way that removes all hassle. Check your specific sailing; the math rarely favours the desk except on the longest canal outings.
Assume an 8am–4pm window with last tender around 3pm. Take the first tender ashore by 8:30am and head straight to the Panama Canal Sightseeing Tour: Miraflores Locks and Canal Zone, returning to the pier by 1pm. Skip everything else. This uses the strongest landmark option without pushing the tender deadline.
From the pier, a taxi to Casco Viejo for the Casco Viejo Walking Tour: History, Culture & Local Tasting works if you prefer culture over engineering, but you will feel rushed. The wildlife or Emberá tours require more driving and eat the half-day alive. One solid excursion, early departure, and a relaxed tender line beats two half-baked ones.

If I could pick only one, I would take the Panama: 6-Hour Panama Canal Southbound Cruise & Lunch. It is the single most distinctive thing you can do here, the ship’s version is markedly more expensive, and the landmark payoff is unmatched. Everything else is nice; this is the reason the port is on the itinerary.
