Marksburg Castle, Braubach

Tour the only hilltop castle on the Rhine that was never destroyed: a fully intact medieval fortress with its original kitchen, armory, gun battery and knights' hall, instead of the romantic ruins that line the rest of the valley. As headquarters of the German Castles Association, you walk the real thing, not a reconstruction. It's about 15 minutes by train to Braubach, then a short climb or shuttle up to the gate.

Boppard Chairlift to the Vierseenblick ('Four-Lakes View')

Ride a nostalgic 1950s open chairlift 20 minutes up the vineyard slopes to the Vierseenblick, where a hairpin bend of the Rhine creates the optical illusion of four separate lakes, plus the Gedeonseck panorama over the gorge. It's the classic Rhine viewpoint photo and a genuine low-key thrill with your feet dangling over the vines. Boppard is ~20 min by train or a KD boat hop from Koblenz, making it an easy half-day add-on or a pairing with the gorge cruise.

Stolzenfels Castle (Schloss Stolzenfels)

Explore the masterpiece of Rhine Romanticism, a Prussian royal summer palace rebuilt for King Frederick William IV in lavish neo-Gothic style, with original 19th-century frescoes, interiors and terraced gardens above the river. This is the fairy-tale, storybook side of the Rhine that defines the region's image. Crucially it sits on the Koblenz side of the river, a short bus or taxi ride from the berth, so no ferry crossing is needed.

Mosel/Mittelrhein Riesling Tasting at a Working Winery

Koblenz sits where two great Riesling regions meet, and the steep slate slopes and the river's reflected heat produce some of the world's benchmark Rieslings. Taste 3-4 of them with the family that actually farms the vines at Weinkeller Schwaab, a working Mosel winery right on the riverbank in Koblenz-Guels, about 10 minutes from the center.
