Visiting the Anne Frank House: Practical Guide

The Anne Frank House is sobering and worth doing once. You walk through the exact rooms where Anne, her family, and four others hid for over two years. The space is small, stairs are steep, and the Secret Annex feels smaller and darker than most people expect. The museum does a good job of letting the story and the building do the talking—no dramatic recreations, just preserved rooms, quotes on the walls, and Anne's actual diary on display. Expect to feel quiet and a bit heavy by the end. Most visits take 60-90 minutes.

Best time to go is October to April on a weekday morning. Summers are crowded and hot; lines get long even with timed tickets. Expect to pay around €15-25 for a standard ticket if you book directly. Guided walking tours that include the house or the surrounding Jewish Quarter usually run €40-70 depending on group size and whether transport is included. Book the house tickets the moment they release (usually two months out) or accept that you'll pay more for a tour that guarantees entry.

Honest tips: Get the standard house ticket and do the annex on your own—it's more powerful without a guide talking the whole time. Skip the paid audio guide if you're a strong reader; the wall texts are excellent. If the house is sold out, a good small-group walking tour of the neighborhood that ends at the monument is a solid backup.
