Should You Climb the Arc de Triomphe?

The climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe gives you one of the best views in Paris. At 50 meters high, you stand right above the chaotic traffic circle of the Champs-Élysées and get a clear, unobstructed panorama of the city, including a perfect straight shot toward the Louvre and La Défense. Expect 284 steps after the elevator drops you off partway up. The viewing platform is relatively spacious but can feel crowded when multiple tour groups arrive at once. The experience is more about the 360-degree city view and seeing the monumental scale of the arch up close than any fancy exhibits inside.

Go in spring or fall if you can; summer lines are longer and the platform gets hot. Expect to pay around €15–25 per person depending on whether you buy a simple ticket or join a small guided tour that includes skip-the-line access. One honest tip: skip the museum levels on the way up if you're short on time – they're interesting but not essential. Do take the guided option if it's your first visit; the guide's explanation of the carvings and history makes the whole thing far more rewarding than just wandering up alone.
