Bamboo Rafting in Montego Bay: Worth It?

Bamboo rafting here means sitting on a long handmade raft while a local captain poles you slowly down the Great River. The trip lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. Expect mostly calm water with very few small rapids, thick riverside vegetation, and the captain pointing out birds or telling light stories. Some packages add a stop for a limestone foot or body massage on the riverbank. It's relaxing rather than thrilling — more like a scenic float than an adventure. The scenery is pleasant but not dramatically different from other Jamaican rivers.

Best time is December to April when the water is lower and clearer and rain is less likely to cancel trips. June to November can be hotter, wetter, and occasionally too high or muddy for safe rafting. Expect to pay around $60–$110 per person including transport from Montego Bay hotels, guide, and sometimes the massage. Private rafts for couples or families cost more.

Pick the basic river trip with a good captain; skip the add-on massage if you're short on time or don't like being rubbed with cold river stones in public. Bring bug spray, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash for tips — the captains work hard for them. Go early in the day before the tour buses arrive.
