Banana Boat Ride in Montego Bay: Worth It?

A banana boat ride in Montego Bay is exactly what it sounds like: you sit on a giant inflatable banana towed behind a speedboat while it whips around the bay, does tight turns, and tries to throw you off. Expect lots of screaming, laughing, and saltwater in your face. The rides usually last 15–25 minutes and often include a few stops for swimming or snorkeling. It’s high-energy, loud, and genuinely fun if you like that sort of thing, but it can feel chaotic and repetitive if you’re not in the mood for constant splashing and engine noise.

Best time is December to April when the water is calmer and the weather is more reliable. Summer and fall bring higher waves and rain, which can cancel rides or make them rough. Expect to pay around $25–$45 per person depending on whether it’s a quick 15-minute thrill ride or a longer combo trip that includes snorkeling and drinks. Book through your cruise port or hotel excursion desk; independent operators on the beach are cheaper but less reliable.

Tip: Choose the shorter pure banana boat ride if you just want the silly thrill; skip the full-day “banana boat + Dunn’s River + Blue Hole” packages unless you actually want to spend 7 hours in a tour van. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, bring a waterproof phone case or leave your phone behind, and don’t be shy about tapping out early if you get seasick. It’s a fun memory, but once is usually enough.
