Mayfield Falls is a real river hike about 45–60 minutes inland from Montego Bay. You walk, climb, and swim up a series of small waterfalls and natural pools in the middle of jungle scenery. Expect to get completely wet, scramble over slippery rocks, and be in the water for roughly two hours. The terrain is uneven and the current can be surprisingly strong in spots; it’s more physical than most people anticipate. Guides help you up the trickier sections and point out fish and plants, but it’s not a relaxing float trip. It’s refreshing, a bit adventurous, and feels far removed from the resort strip.
Best time to go is December to April when the water is clearest and rain is less likely. June–November the river can be browner and the rocks even slipperier after heavy rain. Expect to pay around $110–$190 per person from Montego Bay depending on whether you join a small group tour with lunch and transport or hire a private driver. Admission alone is about $25 cash if you somehow get there independently.
Tip: choose the standard river walk and skip the longer “extreme” package unless you really want rope climbs and jumps; the basic route already gives you the best scenery without extra fatigue. Bring water shoes with good grip and a dry bag for your phone – the cheap ones sold on-site usually leak.
