Montego Bay Beach Visit: What to Know

Montego Bay's beaches deliver the classic Jamaica postcard — bright white sand, calm turquoise water, and plenty of vendors. Expect a lively scene rather than quiet seclusion. Many beaches are narrow and fringed by hotels or bars, so music, jet skis, and local hustlers offering everything from hair braiding to boat rides are part of the experience. The water is warm and usually gentle, good for swimming and snorkeling, but crowds can be heavy around cruise ship arrival times. Doctor's Cave and Cornwall beaches are popular for a reason: decent facilities, clear water, and easy access from the main strip.

Best time to visit is December to April when the weather is driest and seas are calmest. Summer and fall bring cheaper rates but higher rain chances and occasional rough water. Expect to pay around $15–40 for beach entry and chair rental at the main public beaches, or $50–90 for a half-day guided excursion that includes transport, snorkel gear, and a stop or two. Food and drinks add another $20–40 easily. Skip the generic catamaran booze cruises if you dislike crowds and upselling; instead pick a simple beach-hop tour or just pay the entry at one good beach and stay put. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash in small bills, and leave valuables at your hotel.
