Belém Tower: Worth Visiting in Lisbon?

Expect a small but striking 16th-century defensive tower right on the Tagus River. The interior is compact: you climb narrow spiral stairs to several levels with cannon emplacements, views over the water, and a rooftop terrace. It gets crowded fast; lines for tickets and the single-file stairs can easily eat 45-90 minutes on busy days. The experience is more about the building itself and the photos than deep historical insight unless you read the modest panels or join a tour. Pair it with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery if you're doing the full Belém half-day.

Best time is shoulder season (March-May or October-November) on a weekday morning shortly after opening. Summer weekends are packed with cruise passengers and the sun reflects harshly off the stone. Expect to pay around €12-25 total per person depending on whether you buy just the tower ticket, add the monastery, or join a small-group walking tour that includes both plus pastéis de nata.

Tip: get the combined ticket and visit the tower first, then the monastery while the day is still cool. Skip the tower if you're short on time or hate stairs and crowds; the exterior and riverside walk are free and often the best part anyway. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes.
