It gets crowded fast; lines for tickets and the single-file stairs can easily eat 45-90 minutes on busy days. The experience is more about the building itself and the photos than deep historical insight unless you read the modest panels or join a tour. Pair it with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery if you're doing the full Belém half-day.

Best time is shoulder season (March-May or October-November) on a weekday morning shortly after opening. Summer weekends are packed with cruise passengers and the sun reflects harshly off the stone.
