The experience is simple but genuinely cool: you paddle through a narrow mangrove channel after dark into a calm bay where every stroke lights up electric blue from bioluminescent plankton. The water glows like liquid stars when you move your hands or paddle. It’s quiet, a little spooky in the mangroves, and the bioluminescence is usually strong enough to be impressive even on mediocre nights. Expect 2–2.5 hours on the water plus travel time. From San Juan it’s a full evening commitment — you’ll leave around 4–5 pm and get back after midnight.
Best season is winter (Dec–Mar) when rainfall is lower and the bay is less murky. Summer can still work but heavy rains sometimes dilute the effect. Expect to pay around $110–$160 per person including transport from the San Juan area. Tours that leave you to drive yourself in Fajardo are cheaper, usually $45–$70, but you’ll burn most of that on gas, parking, and the hassle of a 1.5-hour drive each way after dark.
Tip: Book the version with round-trip transport from San Juan if it’s your only night in town — it’s worth the extra money for convenience. Skip the “luxury” or private options; a standard guided group tour is plenty. Bring bug spray for the van ride and a waterproof bag for your phone. The mosquitoes in the mangroves are no joke.
