A typical boat cruise in Cape Town lasts 1–3 hours and usually departs from the V&A Waterfront. You'll get close-up views of the harbor, Table Mountain from the water, and often a colony of seals on the breakwater or nearby rocks. The Robben Island trip is longer (half-day) and includes a guided tour of the former prison; it's more serious and historically heavy. Shorter harbor tours are lighter, focused on scenery, seabirds, and the chance of spotting dolphins or whales in season. Expect wind – it can get chilly and bumpy even on a sunny day, so layers and a windbreaker matter more than sunglasses.
The best time is November to April when the weather is more stable and whale watching peaks (June–October for southern right whales, though sightings aren't guaranteed). Expect to pay around $25–45 for a standard harbor cruise and $70–120 for the Robben Island tour including transport and entry. Book ahead in peak season.
Pick a morning departure for calmer seas and better light. Skip the ultra-cheap sunset booze cruises if you're after scenery; they're often crowded and more party than sightseeing. Bring binoculars, sunscreen, and motion-sickness remedies if you're sensitive – the Atlantic can be unforgiving once you clear the harbor wall.
