Expect a straightforward 2-hour group lesson with 6–10 people, most of them beginners. You’ll spend the first 20–30 minutes on the sand learning how to pop up, then head into the water for the rest of the session. Bondi’s waves are usually gentle and well-suited for first-timers, but the beach can get crowded and the instructors move fast. It’s fun and safe if you’re reasonably fit and okay with swallowing some seawater. Most people stand up at least a few times by the end, though actual surfing takes longer to learn.
The best time is November to April when the water is warmer (still 18–22 °C) and days are longer. Summer weekends are busy; weekday mornings are calmer. Expect to pay around AU$120–180 for a standard 2-hour group lesson including board and wetsuit. Private lessons cost noticeably more. Skip the combo packages that tack on bus tours or photos – they rarely add real value. Book a morning slot if possible; the wind usually picks up in the afternoon and makes things harder for beginners.
