The zoo is walkable but hilly; most visitors ride the cable car up and walk down. Keeper talks and seal presentations run throughout the day and are genuinely worth timing your route around. A typical half-day visit involves arriving by ferry from Circular Quay, which is part of the fun and gives you those classic harbour photos before you even reach the gates.

Best time is spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May) when the weather is mild and the animals are active. Summers are hot and crowded; winters are quieter but some animals can be less visible. Expect to pay around $80–130 per adult including ferry transfer and basic entry; adding a behind-the-scenes tour or guided experience pushes it toward $180–250.
