Canyoning in Bali: What You Need to Know

Canyoning in Bali means jumping into cold river pools, sliding down natural rock chutes, rappelling waterfalls, and swimming through narrow gorges. Most trips last 6–8 hours and mix adrenaline with straightforward hiking. Expect to get completely soaked, cold in shaded sections, and tired by the end. The routes near Munduk or in the north are the most popular; they range from beginner-friendly (mostly jumps and slides with guides holding your hand) to advanced (big drops and long abseils). It's a solid adventure if you like water and heights, but not relaxing — you'll be physically engaged the whole day.

The dry season from May to October is best: water levels are lower, rocks less slippery, and weather more predictable. December to March can be exciting with higher flow but also riskier and sometimes cancelled after heavy rain. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a full-day trip including transport from Ubud or Seminyak, basic lunch, and all gear. Private or advanced trips push toward the higher end.

Pick a half-day beginner or intermediate trip first unless you already have canyoning or serious rappelling experience. Skip the absolute cheapest operators — safety standards and equipment quality vary. Bring water shoes if you have them (they're more comfortable than rentals) and a change of clothes for the ride back.
