Should You Get the Lisbon City Card?

Expect free entry to around 30-50 museums, monuments, and sights plus unlimited rides on metros, trams, buses, and funiculars. The card shines if you plan to visit Belém (tower, monastery, coach museum), São Jorge Castle, and a few other paid attractions while hopping around the city. It saves real money only when you actually use it heavily; otherwise it becomes an expensive bus pass. The experience feels practical rather than magical — you’ll skip ticket lines at major spots but still wait in regular ones at popular places like the tram stops.

Best time to buy is spring or fall when crowds are lighter and you can comfortably walk between sights. Summer works too but expect long lines even with the card. Expect to pay around €45-€55 for 24 hours, €70-€85 for 48 hours, and €85-€100 for 72 hours. Get the 48-hour version if you’re doing a proper deep dive; skip the 24-hour unless your time is very limited.

Pick the card if you like structure and want to see Belém plus the castle. Skip it and buy individual tickets if you mainly want to wander Alfama, eat, and drink, or if you’re staying mostly in Baixa and Chiado. One honest tip: validate the card on your first tram or metro ride — the clock starts then, not when you buy it online.
