Should You Take the City Sightseeing Bus in Cape Town?

The Cape Town hop-on hop-off bus is a decent way to cover a lot of ground without renting a car or fighting with taxis, especially if you're short on time or prefer not to plan every move. Expect an open-top double-decker (with a roof available when it's windy or cold) that loops through the city centre, up to Table Mountain, along the Atlantic seaboard to Camps Bay, and on the longer route out to Kirstenbosch and the peninsula. Commentary is via headphones in multiple languages. Buses come every 20–40 minutes depending on the season and route. It’s convenient but not magical — traffic can be heavy and the “hop-off” part only works if you actually want to spend time at the stops.

Best time is November to March when the weather is most reliable, though that’s also peak season and the buses get crowded. Shoulder months (April, September–October) are often a smarter bet. Expect to pay around R400–R650 for a 24-hour ticket; 48-hour tickets are only slightly more and usually the better value if you plan to use both the Red City and Blue Peninsula routes. Single-route tickets are cheaper but limit you.

Tip: Get the combined ticket that includes both routes and start early on the Table Mountain leg — the cable car queue grows fast. Skip the full peninsula loop if you’re already doing a dedicated Cape Point tour; it’s too much time sitting on a bus for what you actually see. Sit on the right side going up the Atlantic seaboard for the best views.
