Is a Day Trip to Ghent from Brussels Worth It?

A day trip to Ghent from Brussels is easy and usually worthwhile if you want a proper taste of medieval Flanders without committing to an overnight. The train takes about 35 minutes, so you can be in the city center by 9:30am and still have a full day. Expect a compact, walkable historic core built around a scenic canal, impressive Gothic architecture, and a noticeably calmer atmosphere than Bruges. The city feels lived-in rather than preserved in amber. You'll cover the main sights (Graslei, the castle, St Bavo's Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece) comfortably in 5–6 hours of actual walking and looking.

Best time is April–June or September–early October. Summer is pleasant but noticeably busier and hotter; winter days are short and the city can feel gloomy. Expect to pay around €70–120 per person for the whole day including return train ticket, lunch, coffee, one museum entry, and a couple of beers. Private tours or guided options push it toward the higher end; independent travel keeps you closer to the lower figure.

Honest tips: Prioritize the view from the top of the Castle of the Counts and a quiet walk along the Patershol district for lunch. Skip the boat tour if the weather is mediocre — the canals are pretty but not essential. Grab a decent Belgian beer on a terrace overlooking the water in the late afternoon before catching an early-evening train back to Brussels. It's a solid, low-stress day that gives you a much better feel for real Belgium than staying only in the capital.
