Should You Do a Dive Trip in Phuket?

Phuket offers easy, convenient diving with a decent mix of reef and wreck sites. Visibility is usually 10-20m, currents can be mild to moderate, and most dives are in the 10-30m range. You'll see plenty of soft corals, reef fish, occasional turtles, leopard sharks, and the occasional bigger stuff if you're lucky. It's not world-class like the Similans or Komodo, but it's perfectly enjoyable for beginners through intermediate divers and very easy to organize from the island. Liveaboards to the Similan Islands or Hin Daeng are also straightforward to add if you want better diving.

Best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmer and visibility is best. May-October is the rainy/monsoon season — cheaper and quieter, but rougher seas, lower visibility, and many operators stop running trips to the better sites. Expect to pay around $90-130 for a two-dive day trip including gear, boat, guide and lunch. Liveaboard trips for 3-4 days run roughly $450-750 depending on the boat and destination. Open Water courses are typically $350-450.

Honest tips: Base yourself in Kata or Chalong rather than Patong if you want a slightly calmer experience. Stick to the smaller, well-reviewed operators that limit group sizes to four divers per guide — the big mass-market boats are stressful and you get less attention. Skip the cheapest 'promo' trips; they're usually overcrowded and cut corners on safety and service.
