Milan Duomo Rooftop: Worth It?

The Duomo rooftop delivers one of Milan's best experiences: walking among 135 spires and 2,000+ marble statues with sweeping views over the city, the Alps visible on clear days. Expect to spend 45-90 minutes up there. It's exposed, often windy, and involves stairs or a narrow elevator. The views are genuinely impressive, especially at sunset, but it's not a relaxing stroll – surfaces are uneven and it can feel crowded even with timed entry. The cathedral itself is impressive from above; you get a real sense of the scale and intricate Gothic details that aren't visible from the piazza below.

Best time is spring or fall for milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is hot and packed; winter can be freezing with early closures. Expect to pay around €15-35 per person depending on whether you choose self-guided with elevator, stairs-only, or a small-group guided tour with skip-the-line access. Guided options add value if you want context about the architecture.

Tip: Pay the extra for the elevator unless you're very fit – the stairs are steep, narrow, and relentless. Skip the official audio guide; it's dry and you won't use it while navigating the rooftops. Go late afternoon for softer light and fewer tour groups.
