El Ateneo Grand Splendid is a stunning early-20th-century theater converted into a bookstore. The main floor holds shelves of books where the orchestra once sat, while the balconies and boxes remain intact with their original gilded details. The old stage now serves as a café. It's genuinely impressive when you first walk in, especially the ceiling and the scale of the place. Most people spend 20-30 minutes inside. You can wander freely, take photos (without flash), and sit for a coffee if you want. It's touristy but still feels special because the conversion was done so well.

The best time to visit is on weekday mornings right after opening, when it's quieter and the light is good. Avoid weekends and late afternoons in summer (Dec-Feb) when it gets packed with tour groups. Expect to pay around $8-15 total — entry is free, so this mainly covers a coffee and a pastry at the café on stage, or a book if you decide to buy one. The coffee is decent but not exceptional.
