A half-day tour to El Escorial gives you a solid look at one of Spain's most important Renaissance sites: a massive monastery, royal palace, and pantheon rolled into one. Expect about 2 hours on-site with a guide explaining the Habsburg history, the basilica, the library, and the royal tombs where most Spanish kings are buried. The building is imposing rather than beautiful; it's austere stone and endless corridors. Many tours also stop at the nearby Valley of the Fallen, a controversial Franco-era monument with a huge cross visible for miles. The whole trip from Madrid usually takes 4.5–6 hours including travel.
Spring and fall are best; the area gets hot in summer and the site has little shade. Expect to pay around €60–€95 per person for a standard guided tour from Madrid, depending on group size, inclusions, and whether transport is by coach or smaller van. Private tours run higher.
Skip the Valley of the Fallen if you're short on time or not interested in 20th-century Spanish history; the monastery alone is enough for most people. Wear comfortable shoes; there's a lot of walking on stone floors. Bring a light jacket even in summer; the thick stone walls keep it cool inside.
