Should You Do an Eskinita Food Crawl in Manila?

An eskinita food crawl means walking through narrow back alleys and busy side streets, eating whatever looks good from small carts and hole-in-the-wall stalls. Expect noise, crowds, diesel fumes mixed with frying oil, and zero glamour. The food is often excellent though — think grilled isaw (chicken intestines), kwek-kwek (deep-fried quail eggs), fish balls in sweet-spicy sauce, and steaming siomai. It’s chaotic, sweaty, and genuinely fun if you’re comfortable with street-level chaos and don’t mind eating while standing or perched on plastic stools.

Best time is November to February when it’s cooler and drier. Evenings from 5pm onward are when everything comes alive; daytime crawls are possible but less atmospheric and some stalls only appear at night. Expect to pay around $12–25 USD per person total if you’re eating freely (roughly 700–1,500 PHP). That usually covers 8–12 different items plus drinks.

Honest tips: prioritize anything that’s grilled or fried to order and served hot — these are generally safer and tastier. Skip pre-cooked items that have been sitting in room-temperature sauce for hours, and be wary of too many adobo-flavored “street sushi” rolls. Bring cash in small bills, wear comfortable shoes that can handle uneven pavement and occasional puddles, and don’t be afraid to say “isa lang” (just one) if a vendor is too aggressive with portions.
