Gorges du Verdon Day Trip from Nice

A full-day trip from Nice to the Gorges du Verdon is one of the better inland excursions on the French Riviera. You’ll spend about 3.5–4 hours each way in a minibus, so the day is long (usually 12–13 hours total). What you get in return are genuinely spectacular turquoise water, sheer limestone cliffs, and a couple of pretty villages like Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. The landscape is dramatic and very different from the coast. Expect photo stops at the best viewpoints, a short boat option on the lake if the weather allows, and a lunch stop. It’s scenic but tiring; don’t plan anything for the evening you return.

Best time is late May to early July or September. You avoid the worst summer crowds and heat while still getting reliably good weather. July and August are hot, busy, and the roads get congested. Expect to pay around €90–€130 per person for a shared minibus tour including transport and commentary; add €15–25 if you want the boat ride on the lake. Private tours start roughly at €450–550 for two people.

Pick the version that stops at the lake and does the upper viewpoints rather than one that spends too much time in lavender fields unless it’s peak bloom. Skip the big coach tours if you can; smaller 8-person vans are far more comfortable on the narrow gorge roads. Bring water, snacks, and good sunglasses—the glare off the water is intense.
