Hiking Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh

Arthur's Seat is a 251m volcanic hill right in the middle of Edinburgh offering the best all-round views of the city, the Firth of Forth, and the Pentland Hills. Expect a proper hike rather than a gentle stroll: the main routes take 45-90 minutes up depending on fitness and which path you pick. The terrain is a mix of wide gravel paths, rocky steps, and some steep grassy sections that get slippery when wet. At the top you'll find a trig point and plenty of space to sit and take it in, but it can be crowded at sunset. The descent is quicker but harder on the knees.

The best time is May to September when the days are long and the ground is usually drier. Early morning or late afternoon beats the midday crowds; a clear summer evening is ideal for sunset but bring a headtorch for the walk down. Expect to pay around £0-£65 depending on whether you go solo or join a small-group guided hike. Independent hikers only need decent shoes and weather-appropriate layers; guided walks include a local guide who explains the geology and history.

Pick the route from Holyrood Park's lower car park up the gentler east flank if it's your first time or you're with less confident walkers; skip the crowded Radical Road path in high winds. Bring water and a snack; there are no facilities on the hill itself. Check the weather before you set off; the wind can be brutal even on days that look fine from your hotel window.
