Horse Riding in Reykjavik: Worth It?

Riding Icelandic horses just outside Reykjavik is one of the more grounded activities you can do in Iceland. Expect a 2-3 hour tour that mixes gentle trails, some open fields, and the classic tölt gait that feels like a smooth gliding walk. The horses are small, sturdy, and friendly; most groups are mixed ability so you won't be cantering if you're a beginner. Scenery is typically lava fields, moss, and distant mountains or ocean views depending on the direction. Weather can change fast—wind and light rain are common even on “good” days—so dress in layers with a waterproof outer shell. Tours usually include pickup from central Reykjavik, a safety briefing, and time to groom or feed the horses afterward.

The best time is May to September when days are long and trails are drier. Summer offers warmer temperatures (though still rarely above 15°C) and better chances of clear views. Shoulder months like April and October can be cheaper and quieter but expect mud and colder hands. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a standard half-day ride including transport; longer or private options push toward the higher end. Skip the big-bus combo tours that tack riding onto whale watching or Golden Circle days—they feel rushed. Book a dedicated riding tour instead, and if possible choose one that limits group size to eight riders or fewer so you actually get to enjoy the experience rather than waiting in line at gates.
