A typical island-hopping cruise from Dubrovnik takes you to the nearby Elaphiti islands on a medium-sized boat carrying 30-80 people. Expect 4–8 hours total, several short stops for swimming in clear water, a simple lunch (usually grilled fish or chicken with salad), and plenty of time on deck admiring the coast. The ride itself is pleasant but not thrilling — it's more about easy access to swimming spots you couldn't reach on foot. The boats get crowded in summer and the “hopping” is often just two or three planned stops with set times, so you won't feel like a free explorer. Still, seeing Dubrovnik's walls from the sea is genuinely impressive.
Best time is late May–early June or September–early October. You'll get good swimming weather, fewer people, and lower prices. July and August are hot, packed, and every boat feels like a floating party. Expect to pay around $70–$120 per person depending on whether it includes lunch, drinks, and how many islands are visited. The cheaper end is basic transport and a swim; the higher end adds a decent meal and smaller group size.
Pick a morning departure that visits at least two islands and gives you 45–60 minutes swimming time at each. Skip the ones that advertise “party vibe” or spend most of the day at just one overcrowded bay. If you're prone to seasickness, choose a catamaran over an old wooden boat when options exist. Book a day or two ahead in shoulder season; in peak summer do it a week early if you can.
