Aperitivo is Milan’s version of happy hour done right: between 6 and 9 pm you order a drink (Negroni, Spritz, or a glass of wine) and get access to a generous buffet of food. Expect cold cuts, cheeses, olives, pasta salads, roasted vegetables, and sometimes warm dishes like meatballs or risotto. It’s not a full dinner but it can easily replace one if you’re strategic. The experience is social and relaxed—people stand or perch at high tables, chatting for an hour or two before deciding on dinner. Locals treat it as an everyday ritual, not a tourist event.
Best from April to early October when you can sit outside; in winter it moves indoors and feels more like after-work drinks. Expect to pay around €10–18 per person for a drink plus the spread in normal neighborhoods, up to €20–25 in trendy Navigli or Brera spots. Skip the big tourist bars right on the canal with loud music and mediocre buffets. Instead pick a neighborhood place with a good-looking counter—look at what the locals are eating. One solid tip: go around 7–7:30 pm when the food is freshest and just refilled. Another: order a second drink only if you’re still hungry; the refills are rarely worth it.
