Kayaking in Las Vegas: What to Know

Most people picture desert when they think of Las Vegas, but a short drive away you can paddle on the Colorado River through Black Canyon. Expect calm, flat water with dramatic canyon walls, hot sun, and almost no current on the typical 4–5 mile round-trip guided tours. It's suitable for complete beginners; guides handle logistics and safety. The scenery is genuinely impressive—steep rock faces, turquoise water, and occasional bighorn sheep—but it's not a wilderness adventure. You'll share the water with other tour groups, especially in spring and fall. The whole thing usually takes 3.5–4 hours including transport from the Strip.

The best time is March–May or September–early November. Summers are brutally hot (100°F+ on the water) and summers are crowded. Winter can be pleasant but chilly when you get wet. Expect to pay around $90–$140 per person for a standard guided half-day trip including kayak, gear, and shuttle. Private tours or longer options push closer to $200.

Pick the smaller-group morning departures if you can—they're cooler and less crowded. Skip the upsold “sunset” trips in summer; the heat doesn't drop off until after dark and you're just paddling in fading light. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen, a good hat, and a waterproof phone case. Everything else is provided.
