Kruger Safari from Johannesburg: Worth It?

A 3-day Kruger safari from Johannesburg means long travel days. You'll spend about 5–6 hours each way by road (or fly in), then do morning and afternoon game drives inside the park. Expect to see plenty of animals if you're patient: the Big Five are the headline but you'll probably remember the herds of elephants at a waterhole or a leopard in a tree more than ticking boxes. Accommodation is usually in simple rest camps or private lodges just outside the park. It's not luxury wilderness immersion but it's comfortable enough after dusty drives.

The best time is May to September (dry season) when animals cluster around water sources and vegetation is thinner, making sightings easier. December to March is greener, cheaper, and great for birdlife but hotter and animals are more spread out. Expect to pay around $1,300–2,000 per person for a basic 3-day inclusive trip from Johannesburg covering transport, park fees, meals and basic lodging. Private or luxury options start higher.

Pick a small-group or private 4x4 drive if your budget allows; the shared 20-seater buses are cheaper but you'll feel like you're on a conveyor belt. Skip trying to do Kruger as a long day trip from Johannesburg – it's exhausting and you see far less. Book at least a couple of months ahead for peak dry season.
