The Mercado Central is a lively, working fish market housed in a grand 19th-century iron-and-glass building. On a typical tour you spend about 45-60 minutes there as part of a larger food walk. Expect lots of noise, vendors shouting offers, huge displays of seafood, and the strong smell of fresh fish. Guides usually explain local species, let you taste ceviche or empanadas at a stall, and sometimes arrange a quick sit-down lunch of king crab, locos (abalone), or fried fish. It's touristy but still used by locals; the energy feels authentic rather than staged. The surrounding streets are gritty, so the market itself is the main attraction.

Best time to visit is spring or fall (September-November or March-May) when temperatures are mild and crowds thinner. Summer can be hot and packed; winter is quieter but some stalls close early. Expect to pay around $80-130 per person for a small-group half-day food tour that includes the market, other stops, and some tastings. Independent entry is free, but you miss the context and the best food recommendations.

Tip: order the fresh oysters or a simple grilled fish if they offer a meal — they're usually excellent.
