Molokini Crater Snorkel Guide

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater three miles off South Maui. The inside wall forms a sheltered bay with very clear water and healthy reefs. Expect to see parrotfish, tangs, triggerfish, and sometimes reef sharks or manta rays. The boat ride takes 15–20 minutes each way. Once there you get roughly an hour in the water. The snorkeling is easy and suitable for beginners because the crater protects you from big swells, but the water can still feel chilly and visibility drops on windy days. Most trips also stop at a second site (usually Turtle Town) on the way back so you get two snorkels in one morning.

The best time is spring and summer (April–September) when the ocean is calmer and visibility is usually 50–100 feet. Winter months bring bigger swells and more rain, which can reduce clarity. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per adult for a standard half-day trip that includes gear, snacks or light breakfast, and crew help. Private charters or premium boats with fewer people run $180–$250.

Pick a morning departure; the water is calmer and the fish are more active before lunch. Skip the biggest party boats if you want space in the water—smaller vessels with 20–40 passengers feel less crowded. Bring your own prescription mask if you need one; rental gear is fine for most people but can fog or leak.
