Surf Lessons in Maui: What You Need to Know

Expect a 2-hour lesson that starts with 20-30 minutes on the sand learning how to pop up, then moves into waist-deep water where your instructor pushes you into gentle waves. Most first-timers stand up within the first hour. The experience is physical but forgiving in Maui’s warm, clear water. Crowds vary: south of Lahaina tends to be busier while spots farther north can feel more relaxed. Instructors are generally patient with beginners of all ages, including kids.

Best time is spring and summer (April–September) when the south and west shores have smaller, consistent waves ideal for learning. Winter brings bigger surf on the north shores, which is usually too advanced for true beginners. Expect to pay around $150–$250 for a private two-hour lesson; group lessons run $80–$130 per person. Private is worth it if you actually want to stand up and not just take turns sharing a board with four other students.

Tip: Book a private morning lesson if your schedule allows – the water is calmer and instructors are fresher. Skip any package that bundles surf lessons with snorkeling or other activities in the same half-day; you’ll feel rushed and neither activity gets enough time.
