Should You Do a Monastery & Buddha Tour in Hong Kong?

A day trip to the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island is one of the more peaceful half-day escapes you can do from Hong Kong. Expect a giant bronze Buddha visible from afar, a working monastery with vegetarian canteen food, and decent hiking trails nearby. The site itself is quite touristy but still feels calmer than anything in the city. Most people combine it with the Ngong Ping cable car (or bus if you hate heights), walk the Wisdom Path, and eat at the monastery. The whole experience usually takes 4–7 hours depending on whether you join a guided group or go independently.

Best time is October to early April when it’s cooler and less humid; summer is brutally hot and the queues for the cable car get painful. Expect to pay around $60–120 per person for a basic half-day tour with transport, or $150–220 if it includes hotel pickup, a decent guide, and lunch. Independent travel is cheaper but more hassle.

Tip: Skip the overpriced “vegetarian meal ticket” at the main hall restaurant and just eat at the simpler canteen instead – same decent Buddhist food, half the price. If you only have one day, pair this with Tai O fishing village rather than trying to add Disneyland or the cable car in peak season. It’s not a life-changing spiritual experience, but it’s genuinely refreshing after a few days in Central.
