Monastery Tours in Hong Kong: Worth It?

A monastery tour in Hong Kong usually means either joining a half-day guided trip to Po Lin Monastery on Lantau (with the Big Buddha) or visiting the quieter Tsz Shan Monastery in the hills of Tai Po. Expect a mix of serious Buddhist sites, crowds of day-trippers, incense, vegetarian food options, and varying degrees of peace. The guided versions last 3–3.5 hours on site but plan on 5–6 hours total once you add travel. Tsz Shan is more contemplative if you get the required free ticket in advance, while Po Lin is bigger, more commercial, and easier to reach by bus or cable car from Tung Chung.

The best time is November to early April when the weather is cooler and humidity is lower — you’ll enjoy hiking the small paths around the monasteries far more. In summer it’s hot, sticky, and the hills lose their appeal. Expect to pay around HKD 350–650 per person depending on whether it’s a basic transport ticket, a small-group tour with a guide, or one that includes a vegetarian meal and cable car.

Honest tip: Do Tsz Shan if you want calm and fewer people — it’s genuinely peaceful when you’re not rushed. Skip the “ultimate temple tour” packages that try to cram in four places in one day; they feel like a checklist and you end up seeing nothing properly. Bring your own water, wear proper shoes, and go early to avoid the loudest tour groups.
