Mount Salève Cable Car from Geneva: Worth It?

The Salève cable car is one of the quickest ways to get above Geneva and see the city, lake, and Alps from 1,000+ meters. The ride itself lasts only about 8 minutes in a fairly old-school gondola that sometimes sways a bit. At the top you step out onto a terrace with wide-open views; on clear days you can see Mont Blanc. Most people walk short trails from there – nothing technical, but the paths can be rocky and steep in places. Expect wind and rapidly changing weather. The whole trip from Geneva usually takes 2–3 hours including bus transfers.

Best time is late spring through early autumn. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends get crowded with local families and the car queues up. Summer evenings can be nice for sunset but the last descent is relatively early. Expect to pay around CHF 25–35 per adult for a return ticket (less for kids and with public transport passes). In winter the cable car sometimes closes or switches to reduced hours because of snow or high winds.

Tip: bring proper walking shoes and a light jacket even if it’s warm in the city – it’s always cooler and windier up top. Skip the overpriced café at the top station and walk ten minutes to the quieter spots instead. If you just want the view without hiking, the lower terrace is enough; no need to climb further unless you have decent fitness and time.
