Should You Do an Old Town Tour in Phuket?

Phuket Old Town is a compact historic area with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, cafes, and a few temples. A typical half-day tour or walking excursion shows you the main squares, colourful buildings, and back lanes while giving basic history of the tin-mining and trading past. Expect a mix of photo stops, wandering through markets or small museums, and perhaps a coffee or snack break. It’s relaxed rather than thrilling; you cover everything on foot or by small van in 2–4 hours. The area gets hot and crowded by midday, so tours that start early feel far more pleasant.

Best time is December to March when it’s dry and slightly cooler. Avoid the peak of rainy season (June–October) unless you don’t mind getting wet between stops. Expect to pay around US$20–30 for a basic shared walking or van tour. Food-focused versions run US$45–60 and are generally more satisfying if you like eating your way through the area.

Pick a small-group walking tour that includes the street art lanes and a local market; those give the best feel for daily life. Skip the big-bus versions that add Wat Chalong and distant beaches – they waste half the day in traffic and dilute the Old Town experience. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat, and don’t be afraid to wander off on your own afterwards; the area is small and easy to explore independently once you have the layout.
