Old Town Trolley San Diego: Worth It?

The Old Town Trolley is a hop-on hop-off narrated tour that loops through San Diego’s main tourist areas including Old Town, the Gaslamp Quarter, the waterfront, Balboa Park, and Coronado. Expect a 90-minute full loop with about 10-12 stops. The buses are open-air double-deckers (with a roof you can pull down if it rains or gets too sunny). Narration is folksy and light on history—more entertaining than scholarly. You can get on and off as many times as you want for 24 or 48 hours, but in practice most people ride it once or twice and use it mainly for transport between distant sights rather than a deep sightseeing experience.

Best time to ride is spring or fall when it’s not brutally hot on the upper deck. Summer can feel miserable midday; winter is pleasant but bring a jacket. Expect to pay around $50–$70 for a one-day adult ticket; kids and multi-day passes are cheaper per day. Buy online in advance during busy seasons to skip the ticket line.

Smart move: pick the morning loop when it’s cooler and crowds are lighter. Skip trying to use it for serious Old Town exploration—parking there is easy and you’ll want more time than the trolley schedule allows. It’s most useful as a scenic, low-effort way to see the broad layout of San Diego on your first visit.
