Old Town Trolley Tour in San Diego: Worth It?

The Old Town Trolley is a hop-on hop-off loop that hits the city's main tourist areas: Old Town, downtown, the waterfront, Balboa Park, and sometimes Coronado. Expect a narrated ride with drivers who mix facts and corny jokes. The full loop takes about 90 minutes if you stay on, but the point is getting off to explore neighborhoods then catching the next one (usually every 20-30 minutes). It's convenient if your time is limited or you don't want to deal with parking, but it moves slowly in traffic and the narration stays pretty surface-level.

Go in spring or fall for milder crowds and weather. Summer gets hot and packed; winter is quieter but can be chilly on the open-air upper deck. Expect to pay around $50–$65 for a one-day adult ticket. Kids and multi-day passes are cheaper per person. Buy online ahead of time.

Best tip: start early at Old Town, ride the full route once to get oriented, then hop off at Balboa Park and the waterfront—the two stops worth the most time. Skip staying on for the narrated loop more than once; the jokes get old fast. If you're only in town for a day or two and want an easy overview without planning routes, it's genuinely useful. Otherwise, rideshares or walking specific neighborhoods often work better.
