Should You Do a Seal Tour in San Diego?

A San Diego seal tour is a 90-minute ride on an amphibious vehicle that drives around parts of downtown and Harbor Island before plunging into the water. You get decent views of the skyline, Navy ships, and a quick cruise around the bay where sea lions usually sun themselves on buoys. The narration is light and touristy—expect corny jokes—but the novelty of driving straight into the bay is genuinely fun for most people, especially kids. It’s not a wildlife expedition; you’ll see a few sea lions and birds but it’s mainly a sightseeing trip with a splash.

Best time is late spring through early fall (May–October) when the weather is reliably warm and the bay is calmer. Summer weekends get crowded so book the first tour of the day if possible. Expect to pay around $45–$65 per adult and $35–$50 per child. Book directly with the operator rather than through third-party resellers to avoid inflated prices or inflexible tickets.

Pick the standard harbor tour and skip any “VIP” or “sunset” add-ons; the experience doesn’t improve enough to justify the markup. If you get seasick easily, sit toward the middle of the vehicle and take motion-sickness meds beforehand—the water portion is short but can get choppy.
