This is a long but doable day trip (about 14-16 hours total) that takes you 4 hours south of Lima to Paracas for a 2-hour boat ride around the Ballestas Islands, then another hour to the Huacachina oasis for dune buggy rides and sandboarding. Expect cold wind and spray on the boat, lots of seabirds and sea lions, then blazing heat in the desert. The buggy part is loud, fast, and fun for most people; sandboarding is easier on your stomach than it looks but you will eat sand. It's a packed itinerary with early hotel pickup around 4-5am and return after 9pm. The scenery is striking but it's not a relaxing beach day.
Best time is December to March when the sea is calmer and marine life more active, though July-October can be clearer for birdwatching. Expect to pay around $80-150 per person depending on group size, inclusions, and whether they add a sunset toast. Private or smaller tours sit at the higher end.
Tip: Choose the version that includes the Ballestas boat tour plus Huacachina buggy/sandboarding; skip any that add long winery stops unless you really want them. Bring a buff or scarf for the sand, wear layers, and don't overpay for "premium" just for a slightly better bus.
