Is the Pasig River Ferry Worth It?

The Pasig River ferry is a genuinely cheap and interesting way to see a different side of Manila. You ride an actual commuter boat that locals use, not a tourist barge. Expect murky brown water, a mix of decaying heritage buildings, modern condos, and gritty industrial stretches. The trip from Guadalupe to Escolta (or vice versa) takes about 45-60 minutes each way and gives decent views of Intramuros, Binondo, and the bridges. It’s not scenic in a postcard way, but it’s real. The boats are basic, air-conditioned, and usually not crowded outside rush hour. Bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to the loud engine noise.

Best time is December to February when it’s cooler and slightly less humid. Avoid the rainy season (June-October) because heavy rain can cancel trips and the river gets even smellier. Expect to pay around $1-2 for a regular one-way ferry ticket. If you want a proper sightseeing experience with commentary and stops, guided tours run roughly $20-110 depending on duration and inclusions. One solid tip: just buy a regular ferry ticket and ride it end-to-end yourself — it’s the most authentic and cheapest option. Skip the expensive full-day tours unless you really want hand-holding; they mostly just repackage the same route with a guide and lunch.
