A typical pyramid tour from Cairo lasts 6–8 hours and includes the Giza Plateau (the three big pyramids and Sphinx), often with a stop at the Grand Egyptian Museum or a quicker add-on to Saqqara and Dahshur. Expect heat, crowds, aggressive vendors, and lots of walking on uneven sand and stones. The sites themselves are impressive but the experience feels more like a busy outdoor museum than a quiet wonder. Guides vary widely—some are excellent and keep the history interesting, others rush you through photo stops. Camel or horse rides near the pyramids are usually overpriced and stressful; most travelers regret them.
The best time is November to March when it’s cooler and daylight hours are pleasant. Summer tours are cheaper but brutal (40°C+). Expect to pay around $60–120 per person for a decent small-group tour with pickup; private tours with a good guide run $150–300 total for one or two people. Skip the big bus tours that hit four sites in one day—they feel rushed. Pick a morning-only Giza-focused tour if it’s your first visit, or a private half-day if you want to linger and avoid the worst crowds. Bring water, wear good shoes, and negotiate any extras firmly on site.
