Should You Do a Rice Paddy Tour in Bali?

A rice paddy tour in Bali usually means spending a few hours walking through bright green, stepped terraces, often in the Ubud area like Tegalalang. Expect a mix of beautiful views, some photo stops, and a decent amount of tourists. The better ones combine the fields with a short temple or waterfall visit. It’s pleasant and photogenic but not a deep cultural immersion — more like a scenic half-day activity. The walks are easy to moderate, though it gets hot and slippery after rain. You’ll see farmers working, learn a bit about the subak irrigation system, and probably drink young coconut at a swing café overlooking the terraces.

The best time is the wet season (December–March) or right after it ends when the paddies are vivid green and lush. Dry season (June–September) is easier for walking but the fields turn golden or brown before harvest. Expect to pay around $35–$85 per person depending on whether it’s a half-day shared tour, private driver, or full-day experience with lunch and extra stops. Private tours with just your group are noticeably better.

Tip: Pick a tour that goes early in the morning to avoid crowds and the worst heat. Skip anything that includes the monkey forest if you’ve already done one elsewhere — the rice terrace part is the highlight. Wear proper walking shoes, not flip-flops, and bring cash for small tips or drinks.
