Uluwatu Temple Tour in Bali: Worth It?

Uluwatu Temple sits on a high limestone cliff above the Indian Ocean in southern Bali. The main draw is the dramatic setting, the resident monkeys, and the nightly Kecak fire dance performed at sunset. Expect a fairly touristy experience: stone pathways, souvenir stalls, and crowds gathering for photos at the cliff edge. The temple itself is small but atmospheric; most people spend 45–90 minutes there before watching the dance in an open-air amphitheater. The show is energetic and visually striking even if you’re not into cultural performances. Monkeys are bold – they will snatch anything loose, especially glasses, hats, and bags.

Best time to visit is the dry season (May–October) when paths are less slippery and sunsets are more reliable. Go for a late-afternoon tour that includes the temple visit and the 6:30pm Kecak show. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a half-day tour from Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu that includes transport, entrance fees, and the dance. Private tours sit at the higher end; shared minibus tours are cheaper but involve more waiting around. Independent visits are easy if you have a scooter or hire a driver for the day.

Honest tips: Skip the overpriced seafood dinner packages that most tours push – the food is average and the restaurants are packed. Instead, head to one of the warungs further down the peninsula afterward. Definitely hire a local guide or sarong attendant at the temple entrance to watch your stuff and keep the monkeys away; it’s cheap and saves hassle.
