Rose Island Excursion from Nassau: Worth It?

Rose Island is a small cay about 30-45 minutes by boat from Nassau. Most excursions follow a similar pattern: slow cruise out of the harbor, two snorkel stops (one at a healthy reef, another at a turtle sanctuary near Green Cay), and then a few hours at a quiet beach where the crew sets up chairs, serves lunch, and lets you swim or relax. The water is clear and shallow, the turtles are usually easy to spot, and the beach itself is calm with soft sand. It’s not remote wilderness — you’ll be with 20-40 other people — but it feels noticeably less crowded than the main tourist beaches in Nassau. Expect the full trip to take 4–6 hours door-to-door.

Best time is December through April when the weather is most reliable and seas are calmer. Summer and early fall can be hot, humid, and more prone to afternoon showers or rougher water that cancels trips. Expect to pay around $65–$95 per person for a standard half-day tour including snorkel gear, lunch, and drinks. Private charters or smaller premium boats run noticeably higher.

Tip: Choose the version that visits both the reef and the turtle area — the turtles are the highlight for most people. Skip the full-day “party boat” versions if you want a relaxed experience; they tend to get loud and crowded. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and your own towel if you’re picky about quality.
