Rosario Islands Tour from Cartagena: Worth It?

A typical Rosario Islands tour is a full-day boat trip (roughly 8am–4:30pm) that takes you out to the coral islands about an hour from Cartagena. You’ll usually stop at two or three islands, get decent snorkeling over reefs that are still in okay shape, spend time swimming and lounging on a beach with rented chairs, and eat a basic lunch (fish, rice, plantains). The water is clear and warm, the scenery is genuinely pretty, but it’s not a deserted paradise—expect other tour boats, music, and a lively rather than tranquil vibe. It’s a solid way to see a different side of the coast without arranging boats and logistics yourself.

Best time is December to March when the water is calmest and visibility is highest. July–November can be rougher with more rain and poorer snorkeling conditions. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person depending on whether you go on a smaller sailboat or a bigger party catamaran; that usually covers transport, snorkel gear, lunch, and island access fees. Private or semi-private options push toward the higher end.

Tip: Choose a smaller group tour that visits the quieter outer islands if you want better snorkeling and fewer crowds—skip the big loud catamarans unless you’re in the mood for a floating party. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone case, and cash for drinks or tips; the lunch is usually fine but nothing special.
