The Royal Yacht Britannia is a well-preserved 1950s royal ship permanently docked in Leith, about 20 minutes from central Edinburgh. Expect a self-guided audio tour that takes you through the royal apartments, crew quarters, bridge, and engine room. It’s interesting if you like maritime history or royal anecdotes, but fairly straightforward – polished wood, photos, and signage rather than flashy exhibits. Most people spend 60-90 minutes onboard. The site also has a small café and gift shop in the adjacent Ocean Terminal.
Best time to visit is spring or autumn (April-May or September-October) when crowds are lighter and Edinburgh weather is usually decent. Summer gets very busy with long queues; winter is quieter but can be cold and windy on the exposed dock. Expect to pay around £15-£20 per adult, less for kids and seniors; family tickets bring the per-person cost down slightly. Adding transport from the city centre bumps the total to £25-£35.
Tip: go early in the day or late afternoon to avoid coach parties. Skip the overpriced official guidebook – the free audio tour is clear and sufficient. If you’re short on time or not especially into royal history, a quick exterior photo from the dock is often enough.
