Safari Float in Liberia: Is It Worth It?

A Liberia safari float is a relaxed 3–4 hour paddle down the Peñas Blancas River, usually starting from near the Arenal area. You’ll drift through rainforest corridors while guides point out birds, howler monkeys, caimans, sloths, and the occasional turtle. It’s far less physical than whitewater rafting and more about quiet observation. Expect some rain even in the dry season; the jungle stays green and animals stay active. The float itself is gentle with almost no rapids, so it works for most ages and fitness levels. Bring binoculars if you have them, and prepare to get wet.

Best time is December to April during the dry season when water levels are lower and you’re less likely to get torrential downpours, though January–March tends to be the sweet spot for wildlife sightings. Expect to pay around $65–95 per person including transport from Liberia, lunch, and gear. Private tours or hotel pickups push it toward the higher end.

Tip: Choose the morning departure if possible; animals are more active and the light is better for photos.
